Happy new year! Sorry its a bit late but Christmas time is extremely busy in this business. I hope everyone had a nice one blah blah blah...
I was planning to do a list of my favourite tracks of 2009, but even typing 2009 seems horribly antiquated, plus theres been plenty of great reviews of the year and of the decade on other sites, and I cant get hold of Jimmy Carr to host it. Instead Get Lower will look forward not backward, onward not downward or Jedward.
Big up to DJ Hotpoint aka Ben Miller for his very funny blog. An old friend from Norwich days, DJHotpoint.com is packed with good tunes, jokes videos and well written musings on the music scene. It was on his blog that I spotted CJ Beatz's mixtape "The best decade of UK Street Music ever". At first I was wary of this high concept idea, but this smashes it. Running from 2000 through to 2009, all the tracks of our youth have been worked into the mix, and in a nice touch big cultural landmarks of the decade feature. Personal highlights are jade goody saying "dr heinstein" and an amazing bit of audio of a radio dispute between Dizzee and Asher D, who used to be a very naughty boy. The mixing isn't as sharp or dancefloor ready as Durrty Goodz's seminal Switching Songs part 2 but it is a great idea and a perfect way to salute the last 10 years of fantastic urban music that has come out of the UK.
Ignore the awful artwork and download this great bit of work here
