VIERS EXCLUSIVE MIX + INTERVIEW
Viers is one of the best new artists Get Low has stumbled across in months. His productions float from bass music to house to future garage and as we've said before, Viers' productions are drenched with a sheen of understated cool and a clipped professionalism.
His new track 'Werk' gets busy with the wonky sub-bass and click clack of percussion.

What's up? What are you doing right this second?
Other than doing this, I'm having a mint tea and listening over a new EP to see if it is finalised.
How would you describe your sound?
I'd say it has mixed elements, mostly ties in with the "Future Garage" movement, but it has definitely house-y and juke-esque elements.

Do you feel you've reached your signature sound yet, something definably 'Viers'?
I'm still spreading my wings, I think right this moment its all about the 808 bass and the rhythmic pulse, but I'm sure I'll evolve more in the future. I think even if my sound seems to drastically change there will still be some elements from the music I'm making now. Guessing that is what "Viers" is.
What artists do you feel influence your music within electronic music?
Oof! Too many to name individually. I'd say right now people like Addison Groove, Pearson Sound, Modeselektor, Jamie Grind, Metronomy, The Black Ghosts and Jitset.
The recent revival of great Grime music from the likes of the Butterz crew has really caught my attention. But also the likes of Kraftwerk who are probably one of the biggest inspirations and influence, even so I try not to let all these artists sway how I make my music (try!).

You seem pretty versatile. 'Werk' has got some serious footwork elements, 'Spasm' is decidedly Funky, and you're dabbling with some future garage bits too. Do you have to get into a different frame of mind when producing different genres or is it all "bass music" to you? Target, the 1Xtra presenter from that radio interview calls you a Dubstep producer! Surely not?
I think "Dubstep" has become more than the original kick on 1 and snare on 3 with a bit of sub bass, it's a defining moment so it seems strange it has almost become a "dirty word". Most if not all of my music hold elements of "Dubstep" in it, without being overly obvious. I'm sure you could pick a few influences in my tracks like "Night". To cut it short, I'd say that the "Future Garage" sound is a mash of Dubstep,

Any artists or DJs you've seen live or in the club that made a serious impression on you?
Well recently I went to see Ben UFO and Four Tet, probably the most amazing mixing I have ever seen, especially for full vinyl DJs. Before I went to see them I said that I didn't like DJing, they changed my opinion quite fast!

Describe to me your production process. Do you lock yourself in your room without distraction, hop on lots of different ideas, or do you antagonise laboriously over each track? Do you work isolated late into the night or is it quite a breezy affair. Elaborate.
As sad as it sounds I'm quite an isolated person anyway, I tend to stick in my room till about 12pm-4am with lights off speakers on. In my production process I think the lack of light helps you hear, if I'm in a fully lit room I feel like I'm in the wrong environment to listen to most of my tunes. I don't use really any hardware and most of my music is trial and error, I rarely sit down and think "oh I want to make this kind of track in this kind of genre", I start with something small and let it grow in front of me.
What other up and coming artists would you tip for us to check out?
Geez haha, too many once again? Crimson from Canada is being too sick recently, vibing on ol'skool Dubstep and ambient 2-step, gets better with ever production! Also the likes of Eclectic, iO and Tanka.

Who'd you love to collaborate on a track with?
I've been wanting to do with Crimson for a long time, but if this is anyone in the world I'd have to say a draw betwen metronomy, Jitset and The Black Ghosts.
You've recently had a release out on L2S Recordings, congratulations! They've got to be the premier Future Garage label.
Thanks! Whistla is debatably the first person to coin the phrase "Future Garage", it is quite an honour! I don't think there are that many "dedicated" Future Garage label's, making L2S very important to developing the scene. Apart from that working with garage legend Duncan Powell was quite an experience, love his remix, takes takes a very nice twist on the original.
Your Spacial Mix 002 for us is sick. Is that the kind of thing we could expect from a live DJ set from you in the club?
I'd say its as good and expection people are going to get for a while, I won't be playing out until probably late next year when I get everything sorted!
I'm trying to put together a "live" set, it will be done on my laptop but I might intergrate my vinyl into it somehow, I want to make the DJ set more original I suppose. Also I wouldn't want to bore the crowd with "Future Garage" all night, I'd throw in a few ol'skool bits.

What future releases or developments from Viers can we look forward to?
I'm working on a 8 track EP for Waaga Records, also Sophia is due out on Subdepth at some point in time... can't be very specific because I don't know much!
A live set will be coming soon, I'll try to get round the UK at some point in time but everything is a bit up in the air at the moment, can't say much haha!

Skandal does an exclusive mix for Get Low
Being Skream's informal Godfather; Skandal's a familiar face in the shadows within Dubstep's biggest events.
Last December, Skandal gained a prestigious place on the Croydub line-up, joining a list including Loefah, Benga, Joker, Joy Orbison, Oneman, Plastician, N-Type and more.
Skandal has access to a wealth of unreleased dubs, often copping them before they're officially named or finished. He's made (in our opinion) the best "'Pon De Floor" Dubstep remix out there, and with a recently beefed up studio set-up, watch out for new material coming later this year.
Skandal started DJ'ing in 1994, during the Jungle era. With 16 years of DJ'ing experience under his belt, he's cranked out a banging 42 minute mix of current, classic, and unreleased dubs.
Simply, the mix spanks it.

KOZEE : EXCLUSIVE interview & mix!
Kozee hails from San Francisco, California. I met her and became friends whilst I was living in San Francisco. Besides DJing and producing, she also runs a staple Dubstep night in San Francisco called Redline / Makeout Sessions. If you're ever over there, it's well worth checking out.
Here's our interview with Kozee exclusively for Get Low.
Get Low: You remember how we first met? It was at the Argon night at Matador [a club in SF]. I probably made a poor first impression; not about drunkenly mc'ing on the mic over Noah D!
Kozee: Haha yea you were pretty wasted but I enjoyed chatting with you!
GL: First things first, when and how did you first hear Dubstep and what about it made you lock on?
K: When? It was 2005. Didn’t lock on until a few months after I heard it, took a bit of time, I liked Grime a lot more at that point.
GL: Is it only recently that you've been on a production tip? You collaborated with DZ for the track 'Crack' which got banged out by Starkey, Rusko and even Crookers. Big up getting such a response on your first track!
K: Thank you! Yea it’s funny how it happened cos I didn’t like the tune very much, but when we played it out people went mental and then the feeling grew on me.
GL: You've worked with DZ on more than a few tracks. Why is that, what is it like, and what do you like about producing with him? Does his style compliment yours, or does he play more of a mentor role?
K: We do work together, he is my boyfriend and we live together so it’s just what we do. I love working with him because I trust him, and I love his sound, he is very diverse! A lot of you know his sound, and like I said he is very diverse and he is a huge mentor but we have been able to mesh styles very well we do complement each other.
GL: Are you first and foremost a promoter? Was your Redline / Makeout sessions clubnights one of the first Dubstep nights in SF?
K: No, I am first and foremost a DJ. No, Grime City was the first; my respect goes out to them! Redline has been very successful and I am very proud to be a part of that!
GL: You're very established as a Dubstep DJ in SF. How'd you describe your DJ sets? You dance a bit too behind the decks which is entertaining to watch.
K: HAHA! You gotta have fun and show that you love what you do! My sets are dependent on the time I play, I love being diverse and love that Dubstep is so diverse aswell.
GL: I'll get this out of the way. You're part of a strong female presence within Dubstep, with the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Ikonika, Kito, Vaccine, & Ultraviolet. In terms of crowds, I went to Croydub the other week and it looked like a nearly 50/50 male : female ratio.
Is it just over analysis bollocks or do you think there's something inherently attractive or accessible about Dubstep to a) promoters, producers etc such as yourself and b) to females generally? Obviously you're the spokesperson to your entire gender!
K: Yes, there seems to be a more ‘open arms’ feeling towards women, I appreciate that feeling. Women I think find the music very sexy and it def shows because you really feel sub bass in the lower areas which gets to more ‘bumpin & grinding’ … never a bad thing!
Also, can I just say that because of Dubstep I have met some of the MOST amazing women I have ever met throughout my life, it’s such a great thing!
GL: Over here we've got huge venues like Fabric & Matter repping it, Dubstep on the main and pirate radio stations, and the ubiquitousness of anthems such as Skream's La Roux remix in mainstream clubs, (plus a top 10 position on the national music chart with 'Night' by Benga & Coki).
With Rihannia hopping on Dubstep, you seeing a change in mood amongst your fellow country-people? Are people noticing that you might be on to something, as it were?
K: Shoot, I wish Rhianna would holler! Minds and Ideas are def changing here, I mean look at the collabs. Loads of hip hop mcs are teaming with producers, it’s a good look IF it’s done right… I’m all for it!
GL: Let's talk about Dubstep in San Francisco. It took me by surprise the strength of the scene there.
K: I love this city! Honestly, there has to be something in the water, people are so damn creative and have huge hearts! …And shit keeps blowing up bigger. Really proud that we are on the map.
GL: You reckon SF dubstep has a particular flavor that defines it from other regions?
K: It's very diverse but I think we def have that dubby vibe on lock.
GL: Loefah said Dubstep is the new underground hip hop in LA (but probably applicable to the rest of California and the US). What do you think?
K: Eh, maybe. Not much thought on that.
GL: Plastician once told me that Example said to him how nice it was hanging out with Dubstep djs as they all seemed to be mates with each other, especially as he felt that all Drum & Bass djs seem to hate each other behind each others backs! Why do you think that is?
K: Lol no comment.
GL: I definitely felt the friendliness with you lot. You especially, safe for taking me under your wing!
K: Yea man it’s all about welcoming people!
GL: Any info or peeps you want to shout out?
K: Yea my Sugarloaf EP drops Feb 2nd, it’s a digital release on Badman Digital. I'm in the States until September then I’ll be in UK and Europe touring for a few weeks, should be good!
