HELP HAVANA GET ITS ROOFTOP PARTIES BACK and chance to win INSANE goodies.

Havana mascot, Beans the dog.  Photo taken by Mike Baxter.

The greatest contribution in recent years to nightlife in the city of Norwich has been the rooftop terrace at Havana, the venue we're holding our next GET LOW event.

Two great memories:

Over the Summer when the radi8 gang were playing minimal techno up to 6am in the morning.  Don't bother going to Ibiza to dance while the sun rises, just head to Norwich.

At the Garden Rave after party, the sheer demand meant it was a pretty exclusive event with The Lick on the decks with his ridiculous vinyl collection.  Whilst the queue outside was round the block, we strolled in to find a sea of smiles on the dancefloor, people dancing on the seats and deafening cheers as one classic track after another were inflicted on the crowd.  It was like a Barcadi advert.

And then the Council took all the music away.

I'm not at liberty to say what caused it all, but it wasn't to do with noise pollution, trouble or complaints.  The Police are fine with the rooftop parties.  What I can say is that it really does come down to just one dude (and his spurious reasons).

Let me hand it over to Havana to speak:

"anthonyshearman@norwich.gov.uk

Email this guy and tell him you want it back.

Basically this man alone is holding up the rooftop party.

Norwich 'City of Culture' does not like music outside.  Kids are loud, noisy, drunken, annoying, non voting, non mattering, council tax paying yet non important members of the City.  Basically, you don't matter.

So lets matter."

Post your email on the campaign's facebook wall.  The person with the best or funniest email wins.

THE PRIZES

VICE's new book, The World According to VICE.

A bottle of Absolute Vodka for the night.

A bottle of Champagne for you and your friends.

VIP Treatment for the night.

High fives for life.

A Havana discount card for life of infinite value.  You drink for staff prices for pretty much fucking forever.

If we all do this, the GET LOW FREE PARTY will be the Rooftop Re-launch!

Pitchfork: Grime / Dubstep, November 2010. Written by lyrical skengman Martin Clark.

Girl Unit photo by Braiden.

Scribe in chief for the London bass scene, Martin 'Blackdown' Clark comes out this month with an incredible article about the current state of 'the scene'.  This guy either does a lot of Ketamine or is insanely smart.

"The area that has shined brightest in 2010, what the year will be remembered for, is the currently nameless zone that, catalyzed by UK funky, grew out of disenchantment with dubstep's direction and the lack of dancefloor inertia in grime. Out of those negative situations came a new set of creativity, diversity, and possibilities; a fresh ecosystem-- a decentralized matrix of new idea clusters, rather than one dense defined new movement, as we're used to seeing."

Real talk.

Skream - Hats Off

Hats Off by SKREAMIZM

Great new Skream track entitled "Hats Off". It seems to be an update on "Burnin Up", his seminal release on Digital Soundboy last year that re-introduced the amen break into bass music (alongside that La Roux remix). Jungle/rave tributes that hark back to the early 90's have definitely become a growing theme recently, see what you think of this.

TODDLA T ft. MC SEROCEE

Arguably one of the most exciting and innovative British artist on the scene right now, we are proud to host TODDLA T as our badaman headliner. Over the last couple of years Toddla T has become a superstar, destroying festivals and superclubs across the world with his trademark blend of Garage, Dubstep, Dancehall and anything else to make the girls wiggle. After releasing his debut album "Skanky Skanky" to raptourous critical acclaim and mixing a superb edition of the Fabric Live series, Toddla is part of the "In New DJs We Trust" show at BBC Radio 1, giving him a weekly platform to broadcast his bonkers and brilliant music to an eager public. He also collaborates with Redlight for the super-producer project Roller Express.

DO NOT MISS OUT on this highly exclusive and intimate gig from T-willy. By the Summer he'll have moved onto the next level of super-producers and you'll only be able to watch him from 39 miles away on the Glastonbury pyramid stage.

GET LOW CARTEL

Firing tunes like predator drones, the Get Low residents are infamous for making hands involuntarily gunfinger above one's head. They've dj'd alongside a who's who of the biggest names in underground music, and regularly headlined the legendary 900+ event the Garden Rave. Currently making a splash in the London scene, they top up earholes, rumble chestplates, wobble knees and bring bassline to your nostril.  They make dancefloors dangerous.

THE LICK

A shadowy dark horse and DJ in-chief at Havana. Some say The Lick is actually a deep undercover Cuban spy who goes on missions during suspicious 5 day "holidays". Some say The Lick survives on 3 hours of sleep a week and hibernates during the Winter. Some say The Lick actually breathes nitrogen and only eats Faberge eggs. Others know The Lick sneaks up on you with tip-of-your-tongue bangers and ultra-rare mashups and grooves. A legendary crate digger AND master party DJ? You have been warned.

Pow 2011

ft. Lethal B, JME, Wiley, Chipmunk, 2-Face, P Money, Ghetts, and Kano.

Wiley kills it!

MUMDANCE

As a self-professed 'Jack of all trades, Master of none', Mumdance has confounded critics for some time  with his wildly varied portfolio of production credits. From 8-bar Grime remixes of Indie songsters to pioneering the 'Kerplunk' sound, Mumdance creates a fascinating hybrid sound that straddles genres and conforms to none.

Whilst this caveat has, somewhat spuriously, been used to describe every new producer under the sun, Mumdance is worthy of the praise. Refusing to bed into a niche and spurning the predictable and homogenised sound of much 'Bass' music, Mumdance has given birth to an eccentric and dizzying style of his own.

His ascent to prominence has given rise to a myriad of collaborations, from producing for UK Grime stalwarts, Jammer and Boy Better Know, to writing for the Essex based Indie band, Esser. Mumdance's output is as prolific as it is diverse.

True Tiger - Slang Like This

After the success of the Magnetic Man Project major labels have turned thier gaze to Dubstep in a big way. Like Suaron's sweeping eye across the watelands of Mordor, Virgin Records last month announced the signing of Dubstep outfit True Tiger. Consisting of Sukh Knight, Stanza, Scandulous Untld, Stenchman, P-Money and a host of others, True Tiger are a formidable group to say the least. However one cant help thinking that this partnership with Virgin won't end profitably.  Hardly as marketable as the super-group hype of Skream, Benga and Artwork, True Tiger will have to think carefully about what their first LP should contain and understand that the curent frenzy for the dubstep sound is likely to be highly fleeting.

Saying that, "Slang like this" was a certified banger all summer (especially at Outlook Festival). Sukh Knight is on the buttons, exhibiting his grimey, low end dancefloor sound and it perfectly showcases P-Money's scatter gun style. The video features many familiar faces hold tight DJ Cable!  He even manages to get a few seconds of scratching in at the end, something that has never featured in the repertiore of your average Dubstep DJ. Check it out!

Vagabondz London ft. Blak Twang, Phi Life Cypher, Get Low Cartel

Vagabondz returns to London this year for the first time this year with an eclectic line-up that reads like a whos who of Hip-Hop. Dub, Drum & Bass and Future Garage.

On top of the extensive lineup they've got a fully dressed venue powered by Electro Voice Soundsystem who were the guys that did the sound for Outlook Festival.  The sound was fucking sick!

AND!

There's a Silent Disco in the outside courtyard plus a jerk chicken BBQ.

THAT'S WHERE WE'RE DJ'ING.

BOH.

Vice: The Producers ft. Toddla T

Vice is releasing another documentary series, this time focusing on a pick of exciting producers.

Luckily, the first episode is about Toddla T.  Boh!

He chats about making tunes and we see him producing a tune in the studio for his forthcoming album on Ninja Tune.

Worth a watch.

(edit: I would post the whole video but the script html seems to crash the whole blog.  Damn you Vice and your autoplaying videos!  This trailer will have to do, as will the big link to the actual video).
