GET LOW vs REDUX @ BRIXTON JAMM // 1ST APRIL 2011

Two of London's best party crews have teamed up for a very special April Fools Ball at Brixton Jamm on Friday 1st April, with a line-up encompassing all that is great and good in the UK music scene in 2011.

LINE-UP!

Arguably Britain's biggest Dub legends, Iration Steppas will be down to Brixton for a highly exclusive London show.  Long term stalwarts of the scene and festivals like Outlook, Melt, Sunsplash and countless more, they have created a niche for themselves as original party starters.  Spinning their trademark Year 3000 style, Iration Steppas are the true vanguards of real Dub.

We are delighted to be hosting Man Like Me, one of the best loved and most incendiary bands on the circuit.  Their raucous mish mash of Garage, Grime, Pop and Funk gives the perfect party atmosphere, as seen in their hilarious turn in the recent IKEA advert with Jonah Lewie.

DJ Derek has been in the game for so long he makes Rodigan look like a spring chicken.  The 76 year old Bristolian has become a cherished figure amongst UK clubbers with his trademark blend of Soul, Reggae, Funk and whatever else he has recorded on his mini-disc.  His legendary Patois on the mic is a sight to behold, don't miss it.

STICKY - BASHMENT SET

One of the most versatile producers about, Sticky was instrumental in the rise of UK Garage with timeless club bangers such as 'Triplets' and 'BOO!'.  One of the very best party DJs about, Sticky will be laying down a rare 100% Bashment set at the April Fools Ball, specially for the gyaldem!

The poster boy for the monster club sound known as UK Funky, Lil Silva was so upset that he missed the GET LOW JAMM TAKEOVER in January that he simply had to come back for this one.  With releases on Night Slugs and his EP coming out this month, Lil Silva is a name on everyone's lips.

SAMPHA - LIVE

A wonderfully creative and unplaceable sound is Sampha's stock in trade.  From his bittersweet vocals on the "Valentine" single with Jessie Ware to his bashy electronic beats, Sampha has firmly established himself as an exciting talent set to emerge fully in 2011.

Grime's biggest new star rounds off the line-up nicely.  A prolific producer of zoned out, Hyperdub style riddims, Swindle's newest release on Butterz entitled "Mood Swings" showcases the future sound of Grime, indeed the future sound of London.

The members of the Get Low Cartel have built up a formidable reputation as seasoned top party DJs.  Making a splash in London and dj'ing at some of the top festivals nationally - they rumble chestplates, wobble knees and bring bassline to your nostril.  Dancefloors just got dangerous.

Toddla T - Watch Me Dance / Always Moving

Here's a cool little promo for the accompanying documentary for Toddla T's new album "Watch Me Dance", due out this Summer. It seems to be in the style of Sam Farahmand's 2009 film "Part of the weekend never dies" which was based around Soulwax/2 Many DJ's globetrotting romps. These kind of docs are always interesting as they can provide a rare insight into the world of the A-list DJ. It may mostly look like blasting champagne into a crowd of 5,000 doe eyed ravers... and it mostly is! It is still hard bloody work, however, with flights, terminals, parties and even continents seemingly blurring into one unending episode, as chronicled so well in Farahmand's film, which we strongly advise you check out alongside his stirling Pop promo work. Always moving.

S-X vs Ramadanman - Woo Glut // OUT NOW

Wow!  A tune previously only in the hands of a select few - the likes of James Blake, Loefah, and Ramadanman - has today got a full (albeit limited) release on Grime label Butterz.  What a look!

Basically, this is one of those vinyls that should be an instant bag.  Put it this way, I bought Rufage by Loefah 3 years ago for £6.  It's now worth £100.  This is one of those vinyls.

GO COP THAT.

Noisey

Those trendy folks at Vice have recently launched a new "video-driven music discovery platform, documenting the most talented emerging musicians from around the world" called Noisey.

Blimey, so let's get stuck in then!

BIG LINK TO NOISEY

The website is lovely, with swooshing video screens and critically, very little lag.  The landing page has 8 videos, but if you log in you get another 35 or so.

To be honest, there's too much Indie content for our liking, but hopefully this'll get balanced out sooner or later.  Vice were one of the first publications to actually give any page-time to Grime, mostly by documenting the monthly beefs like a inner-city version of Eastenders (in their own words).

Fittingly, they've got a feature on Tempa T which is fascinating.

Who knew odes to ultra-violence could be so marketable to the middle-classes, eh?  We <3 Tempz, he's actually a really nice bloke and smashes up the dance (figuratively, but enough that no venue owner lets him anywhere near a baseball bat on stage).  Scottish skinhead hard men and Tempz lyrics are an unlikely if probably apt combination.

I think it's quite a big ask to get people to invest in creating a whole account to essentially watch some 5 minute videos, and as an product it's definitely more persuasive on a whiteboard than in reality.  But it's well-intentioned, and supporting underground music so fair do's mate.  The proof will be in the pudding if Noisey gets any sort of centrality or importance, but it could become a respected hub or 'stamp of approval' for bands and artists if it gets out there enough.  And the videos are well-made and entertaining.  Keep it up kids, you might go far.

Final Get Low rating:
Well meaning, and nifty.  They need to do a feature on Loefah, Joy Orbison, or Addison Groove.  We'd be happy with Jamie xx or James Blake, at least.  Nevertheless, this is a great example of how corporate sponsorship can be a force of good too.  However, they also need to make the videos not fucking autoplay as default when you emb them though.  Not cool, dudes.

For more on Tempz, check out Tim & Barry's hysterical fly-on-the-wall doc as he visits Scotland.

Femme En Fourrure - Bronco

FEMME EN FOURRURE - BRONCO from Top Billin on Vimeo.

THIS TUNE GOES IN HAAAAARD.

It's like if Ramadanman met Carl Craig - probably.  I don't know much about techno.  But I do know this tune is a banger.  The video is like The Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up' one but following a dutch-looking bloke and trippy cutaways to a horse in snow.  Arty.

Check out the whole EP.  Teeth remix is worth a ganders too.

FEMME EN FOURRURE - BRONCO EP by TOP BILLIN

**Update**

We've been given the go-ahead to give away this track from the EP.

Femme En Fourrure - Brono (Nguzunguzu remix)

It's feels Chopped & Screwed, slowing down the original making it akin to a Resident Evil level instrumental, but with understated phantom-ish drums and laying it on thick with the atmospherics.  In a good way.

And!

Here's a special mix dedicated to the release too.  It's actually really good.  Femme En Fourrure are cool, man.

Where My Stallions At? Mix by Femme En Fourrure

Glo Worm by Jayglo is dope. Plus a mix!

Glo Worm is the one!  It's the second track in this clip at 1min 36 seconds.  The drop is RUDE!  It sounds like what would happen if Snoop Dogg circa 1993 released a gameboy game and this was part of the soundtrack.

Jayglo - Wiseau Funk / Glo Worm [BOKA034] *CLIPS* by boka

Jayglo's also done a mix.  It's pretty dope and starts out with a Prince clip which is just money, as kids say these days.

VIDEO : Skream - Where You Should Be (ft. Sam Frank)

Brand new video by Skream.  The top 5 beckons...

Dope recording of Beats In Abundance's set at our GET LOW Sunday Sessions at The Lock Tavern.

I'm gonna lay you down with some hard truth.  Beats In Abundance are one of the top DJ outfits in London.  Heck, probably in the UK.  Their vast musical knowledge and irreverent flavour means they throw some of the wildest feel-good parties known to man.  They're don't aim for glory, they do it purely for the love of music.  Word of mouth does the rest.

They go way back with us, when they reigned supreme on the student clubnight scene in Norwich when Get Low was just starting out.  Luke Baines (pictured) and his brother Jesse, armed with just a pair of turntables and a cdj (pre-Serato days) would throw wild nights - a smorgasbord of killer jams, mixing ultra-obscure beats with party anthems and curveballs.  And do it in fancy dress.  One time they brought their Mum to their clubnight.  Why?  Because they're badasses.

When I was living in San Francisco for my study year abroad, Luke was working out there and every week we would DJ together for 6 hours straight at a psychodelic bar called Noc Noc on Haight Street.  It was dope.

This is the recording of Beats In Abundance's set from our GET LOW Sunday Sessions event at the legendary Lock Tavern in Camden.  It's more of a slower bpm vibe, and exactly what we'd want to hear whilst supping our pint and noshing our roast.  The event was a hoot, and we got a surprise visit from Annie Mac, Toddla T, Jammer and Jack Beats for Redlight's birthday.  Zing!

Photo taken at Get Low in 2008.  Also featuring Oneman, Jammer and Asbo.  Woi!

SKEPTA'S GOING IIIIIIIIIIIIIN!

His new video for his song 'All Over The House' is a full on porno.  It basically features some sloshpot getting railed in slow motion by some dude all over the house.

It's already created a firestorm on twitter, and it's marketing cunning to rival Blackadder.  Gwan Skepta!

WARNING : VERY EXPLICIT.  XXX.  YOU SEE BOOBS AND PUM AND DE PENIS AND EVERYTHING.

Urban Nerds 4th Bday feat Get Low in Room 3

Check the video above for the unbelievable line-up the Urban Nerds boys have put together. Taking place at The Scala on Saturday May 28th, this is set to be one of the nights of the year. More info to follow

Rinse FM circa 2006 by Georgina Cook

Goergina Cook compiled a collection of seminal pictures between 2005-2008, mostly at DMZ and other Brixton based gigs. This was the era when Dubstep was finding its feet and was still very much a niche genre lost amognst the bustle of South London.

In light of the immensely roadblock DMZ 6th Birthday on Saturday, its astounding to take a look back and see just how much things have changed. Take the below photos of Rinse FM in 2006. It looks in every way like what a Daily Mail reader would think of when he hears the phrase "pirate radio station".

The station changed gears in the following years to become an internationally acclaimed official FM broadcaster with a superb record label and regular spots at some of the worlds biggest clubs and festivals.

DMZ 6th Birthday - Saturday 5th March, Brixton Mass

WOWZA. Us here at Get Low haven't missed a DMZ birthday since 2007, and this year it seems Mala and the gang have gone all out. Skream and Benga may be DMZ staples but they have never been at the level of celebrity as they are at now in 2011, and when you add in a team up like James Blake vs Kode 9 you invite the entire blogosphere to go into meltdown.

DMZ Birthday tips:

1.Get to Brixton for 8pm. Check the size of the queue outside Mass and if its dead you can always go for a drink for a little bit. We recommend the Alma, Dogstar or The Prince.

2. Be prepared for some serious queuing.

3. Neck as much booze as possible beforehand; just because its a church space in the middle of Brixton does not mean that drinks aren't a horrible bump inside. £4 for a Fosters? Jesus wept.

4. Stay til 6am. It may be a slog shuffling about to sub bass for 8 hours but there is always a set worth staying for around 4-5am,and often is when the best surprises are. Plus the tube starts again at 6am.

5. Grab a flyer for Basslaced on your way out...
